Porvoo on Suomen vanhimpia kaupunkeja, ja ensimm\u00e4iset merkinn\u00e4t kaupungista ovat 1300-luvulta. Asemakaavaa ei keskiajalla juurikaan suunniteltu, vaan tontit olivat ep\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisen muotoisia ja pieni\u00e4. Kaupunki tuhoutui useaan kertaan tulipaloissa. Vuoden 1760 palo oli erityisen tuhoisa kun kaupungista paloi noin 2\/3, eli kaupungin 293 talosta vain 91 s\u00e4\u00e4styi liekeilt\u00e4. Kaupunki oli talven tulon takia j\u00e4lleenrakennettava nopeasti, ja siksi asemakaavaa ei juurikaan muutettu. Vanhan Porvoon nykyinen rakennuskanta on p\u00e4\u00e4osin rakennettu vuosina 1760-1820.
